Here is how a new key gets made when there is no spare, what it costs, and what to have ready when you call.
How we make a new key when you have none
No working key or fob at all is a job we handle where the car is parked. We make the new key or key fob, program it to your vehicle on-site, and test it before the job is finished. The car never has to be towed to a dealership.
Push-to-start cars get a new proximity smart key. We program it with professional diagnostic and programming tools, and for certain vehicles or specialized procedures we use the manufacturer's factory software when required.
Worried someone else has your keys?
If the keys went missing with a bag or a wallet, a lost key can still start your car for whoever finds it. When you call, ask us to reset the immobilizer. It is an optional service that removes previously lost or stolen keys and fobs from your vehicle's system, so they can no longer start the car.

For most domestic, Japanese, and Korean makes, these are our starting prices for a new key:

Some makes start higher, and our car key replacement cost guide lists every group. We confirm the final price on-site before any work begins. At a dealership, a key fob often runs $400 to $1,000 or more, and with no key the car has to be towed there first.
Have these ready when you call
- The year, make, and model of the car.
- Your VIN if you can get to it. It is on the dashboard at the base of the windshield and on your insurance card, and it helps us arrive with the right key blank.
- A photo ID, plus the registration, insurance card, title, or bill of sale. If the papers are locked in the car, tell us when you call.
- The exact spot where the car is parked: the deck level, the building number, or the nearest cross street.
We check proof of ownership before any key is made. That protects you, because it means we would not make a key to your car for anyone else either.
Once the new key works, make a spare
A spare made while one key still works is a quicker job than a first key made from scratch. Keep it at home, away from the ring you carry every day, so the next lost key is an inconvenience instead of an emergency.
